Using Your HSA or FSA for Massage Therapy
Many clients don’t realize their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) may cover massage therapy — and it’s more straightforward than it sounds.
The IRS allows HSA and FSA funds to be used for medical care expenses that primarily serve to alleviate or prevent a physical or mental ailment. Conditions that commonly qualify include stress, anxiety, depression, back pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, hypertension, carpal tunnel syndrome, and pain management, among others.
If you have an ongoing condition and you’re already talking to a provider about it, you may be closer to qualifying than you think.
How to Use Your HSA or FSA at B Transformed
- Talk to your medical provider about your condition (Many of you might already have ongoing conversations already)
- Let them know you would like integrate massage intervention in your care and that you would like to use your funds on your HSA
- Your medical provider will need to provide three pieces of information on a prescription letter:
- Medical necessity: Why you need massage therapy (examples: to relieve back pain, to help manage stress, etc)
- Frequency: Number of Sessions per month (example: 2 x a month)
- Duration: Length of treatment (example: 12 months)
- Schedule your massage appointment and bring your HSA or FSA card to your appointment, payment works just like a regular debit card.
- Keep any receipts from your sessions. Some HSA and FSA plans require you to submit receipts for reimbursement after the fact, so it’s worth checking your plan’s requirements ahead of time.
Not sure if your condition qualifies or have questions before booking? Feel free to reach out — we’re happy to help you figure it out before your first visit.
